Andi DeMarino: Mosaic Reflections

The multi-faceted mosaics Delaware Valley artist Andi DeMarino creates come from her heart.  Andi studied with prominent Philadelphia mosaic muralist, Isaiah Zagar, working on indoor and outdoor murals in the city of Philadelphia.  Zagar introduced DeMarino to mosaics that incorporate recycled materials such as mirror, window glass, wine bottles, and traffic lights.  Mosaics captivated her with the tactile experience of working in three dimensions, and the endless possibilities of her chosen materials.  Within the process, she creates intricate hand-made tiles from both clay and glass.  Each glass piece is either painted and cut to size or fused in her kiln.  As an enthusiast of yoga and the power of positive words, she includes quotes in many of her pieces with the hopes of inspiring those who read them.  Her hope is that the inspirational messages found in her work will be enjoyed by those all those who view them. 

"I find my inspiration in nature and in every day encounters with people, especially my three children.  I enjoy the freshness with which they look at the world and try to capture that in my mosaics.  I will pick up a rock while taking a walk and see a texture reminiscent of the scales of a fish.  Pressing the rock into wet clay may inspire me to make an aquatic-themed mosaic.  Even the color in my children’s artwork influences my palette of colors and textures within the glass and clay materials.  I keep a quote book which records numerous memorable daily interactions with people and these quotes readily spark new themes and ideas.”

Andi graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City, and she has participated in nationally juried shows at Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the Manayunk Arts Festival in Philadelphia, PA.  She enjoys the challenge of designing custom work for her clients and bringing their ideas to life and her mosaics are included in many private collections across the country.

Since 1972, Langman Gallery has presented unique handmade crafts and fine art by American artists and designers.  Recently named one of NICHE magazine’s Top Retailers of 2009, the gallery features fine contemporary crafts including ceramics, furniture, glass, jewelry, lighting, paintings, prints, and sculpture.  The annual Top Retailer Awards program recognizes craft retailers who are committed to fair business practices and to growing and strengthening the North American craft community. 

Our gallery is located adjacent to Bloomingdale's on the first level.  Hours are Monday–Saturday, 10-9:00; Sunday 12-6.
